Description

The Company Comeback Challenge is a team-based business competition where members act as turnaround consultants. Teams choose a real company that went bankrupt, shut down, or lost its place in the market (such as Blockbuster, Toys "R" Us, Kodak, BlackBerry, or Sears), analyze what went wrong, and present a strategy for how the company could have been saved.

Goals

  • Understand why real companies fail and what warning signs to look for
  • Strengthen strategic thinking and business decision-making
  • Practice research using real-world evidence and data
  • Compete for prizes and club-wide recognition

How It Works

  1. Teams of 2–3 students form on their own and register through the form (only one Team Lead should register on behalf of the team)
  2. Each team chooses a real company that failed or significantly declined and lists it on the registration form
  3. Teams research the company's history, key decisions, competitors, and changes in its market
  4. Teams develop a 7–10 slide presentation outlining their comeback strategy
  5. Submissions are judged by business professionals and/or club leadership on creativity, feasibility, clarity, and slideshow requirements

Slideshow Requirements

  1. Title Slide – Team name, member names, and company
  2. Company Background – What the company did and what it looked like at its peak
  3. What Went Wrong – Key mistakes and outside factors that led to its decline
  4. Analysis – Supporting data, timeline, and the competitors that took over
  5. Comeback Strategy – What the company should have done differently
